Dame Vera Lynn becomes first 100-year-old to hit the charts

Legendary singer Dame Vera Lynn has seen in her 100th birthday by becoming the first 100-year-old ever to hit UK charts, with her aptly titled 100 album debuting at No.3.

The new album features re-orchestrated versions of Lynn’s most famous songs and was released on Decca last Friday. It is kept from the top spot only by Ed Sheeran at No.1 and Drake at No.2.

First week sales for the album totaled 38,396.

Official Charts Company chief executive, Martin Talbot, said: "What a fantastic achievement for Vera Lynn, to set these amazing landmarks and find herself rubbing shoulders in the albums Top 5 with Ed Sheeran, Drake, Rag 'n' Bone Man and Depeche Mode. I'm sure they feel equally as honoured to be mentioned in the same breath as such a genuine British icon."

On hearing thenews, Dame Vera Lynn said: “I have been quite overwhelmed by the response to my 100th birthday and now the icing on the cake is the news that my new Decca album is No. 3 in the UK Album Charts.”
