Big in Japan

The IFPI and Recording Industry Association Of Japan (RIAJ) has welcomed the ratification of a trade agreement with the EU. Both the European Parliament and Diet of Japan have voted in favour of the deal. The EU-Japan trade agreement extends the term of protection for sound recordings in Japan to match the 70-year duration of protection in the EU. It also provides a platform for continued bilateral discussion on issues such as the introduction of public performance rights for producers in Japan.

The Perfect Kiss

The video for Dua Lipa and Calvin Harris collaboration One Kiss has topped MTV’s rundown of the most played music videos of the year. The former UK No.1 single has racked up Official Charts Company sales of 1,547,597. MTV’s Top 20 had Solo by Clean Bandit feat. Demi Lovato at No.2 and Friends by Marshmello & Anne-Marie at No.3.  The list is based on cumulative on-air music video plays from January 1 to December 3. 2018.

Down the YouTube

YouTube Charts are now available in YouTube Music as playlists. It enables fans in the streaming service’s 29 launched markets to explore the hottest songs and videos both globally and locally. Every country will get five charts playlists: three specific to their country and two global lists. Fans can also add their favourite charts to their library so they can stay up to date on what is trending on the platform. 

Croydon state of mind

Nas, Wizkid and Damian Marley have been confirmed as headliners for the inaugural The Ends Festival, which will run over three days (May 31 to June 2). The Live Nation event, which has a 15,000-capacity, will be staged in Lloyd Park in Croydon. A 48-hour pre-sale is available to local residents.

Elton and Khalid duet for Spotify

Elton John has recorded a pair of Spotify Singles tracks - Bennie and the Jets and a cover of Khalid’s Young Dumb & Broke, which features the US R&B singer. The two tracks were recorded for Spotify live at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas. Artists who have recorded Spotify Sessions include Taylor Swift, Janelle Monáe, Shawn Mendes, Lily Allen, Def Leppard, Chvrches, Jack White, and The National.

Creamfields mau5

Deadmau5 has been announced as the first Friday headliner for Creamfields 2019. The Canadian EDM star first played the festival a decade ago. Creamfields is back in Daresbury, Cheshire from August 22 to August 25. Swedish House Mafia have already been confirmed for the final day.

Beatchain gang

Beatchain, a data-driven platform that aids discovery, marketing, and promotion, has announced strategic partnerships with Eleven Seven Label Group and McGhee Entertainment. Beatchain will use its technology platform to help both companies grow artist fanbases and engagement for developing artists.

“We are thrilled to be working with industry leaders such as E7LG and McGhee Entertainment,” said Beatchain founder Ben Mendoza. “Our newly launched platform will allow music pros to bring their data points together, use the latest in AI, automation, and data science techniques, and drive informed decisions in multiple areas.”

HMUK does it differently

Help Musicians UK (HMUK) has announced the 22 music creators who have received funding from the charity’s first ever Do it Differently Fund, which has distributed over £59,000 in grants. Do it Differently was created by HMUK in partnership with BAPAM (British Association for Performing Arts Medicine) and ThinkMusic to champion the UK’s DIY talent. The full list of recipients is available on the HMUK website.
