Grammys sales surge for winners and performers

Artists who won Grammys or performed at the US music award ceremony on Sunday, February 12 have seen significant spikes in sales, according to tracking company Buzzangle Music.

Sales of Adele's 25 jumped 232% with 4,044 sales on Sunday night in the wake of her five wins, including the Grammy for Album of the Year, while Beyoncé’s Lemonade had the most sales on Sunday out of all the winning albums with 4,373 sales, a 297% increase compared to the previous six day average. Country act Sturgill Simpson saw his album A Sailor’s Guide to Earth post a surge of 789% to 3,471 sales.  

The surge in sales did not simply benefit winners. Bruno Mars, whose album 24K Magic did not win a Grammy, saw sales of his album jump 206% with 6,728 sales on Sunday. Maren Morris’ album did not win the Grammy for Country album of the year, but she did experience an uplift of 300% in sales on Sunday with 2,727 sales.

Ed Sheeran, who performed live his new song Shape Of You, experience a unit increase of 28,714 units following the show, a surge of 164%. Overall, Ed Sheeran saw song sales increase of 166% with a total of 37,060 units.

Buzzangle also reported that all the songs performed on the Grammy’s experienced an average increase of 2,363% in song sales on the night of the Grammys compared to the six days leading up to the awards show.  The song with the overall largest growth in sales of all songs performed on Grammy night is Maren Morris’ Once, performed live with Alicia Keys, with 5,600 sales up over 13,477% in sales on Sunday compared to the previous six days (a daily average of 41 sales).

But the largest percentage growth in both sales of albums and songs belongs to R&B veteran William Bell whose song Born Under A Bad Sign, performed with Gary Clark Junior, had the largest percentage growth in sales with 23,691%, a unit sales increase of 1,698. The average daily songs sales for Born Under A Bad Sign before the awards show was... seven sales. His most recent album, This Is Where I Live, released on Stax, the label from his beginnings that he rejoined after 40 years, now part of Concord Music Group, saw a sales uptake of 4,667% after the show, with sales of 428 units.

The three artists that had tributes during the show -- Prince, the Bee Gees and George Michael -- each experienced triple digit song sales growth: Prince song sales grew 338% on Sunday as a result of the tribute by Bruno Mars and The Time; George Michael song sales grew 553% on Sunday as a result of the tribute by Adele; and Bee Gees song sales grew 640% on Sunday as a result of the tribute by Demi Lovato, Tori Kelly and Little Big Town.

The Grammy Awards ceremony was broadcast live on CBS network on Sunday night and the three-and-a-half hour show saw an increase in ratings over both the 2015 and the 2016 telecasts with 26.05 million viewers on average, against 24.95 million in 2016 and 25.3 million in 2015.
