Gramophone Awards 2016 shortlist revealed

Gramophone has revealed the shortlist for its annual Gramophone Classical Music Awards.

The top six recordings in each of the 12 categories were revealed this morning (August 1). The top three in each category will be revealed on August 17, with the list of winners announced online on August 22 in advance of the gala awards ceremony on September 15, taking place for the third consecutive year at St John’s Smith Square, London.

One of the 12 category winners will go on to receive the coveted Gramophone’s Recording of the Year, to be announced at the ceremony on September 15, alongside special awards including Artist of the Year (voted for by the public), Young Artist of the Year, Lifetime Achievement and Label of the Year.

All other awards will be judged by a panel of industry experts.

The full list of nominees for all recording categories – Baroque Instrumental, Baroque Vocal, Chamber, Choral, Concerto, Contemporary, Early Music, Instrumental, Opera, Orchestral, Recital and Vocal – can be found here.

James Jolly, Gramophone’s editor-in-chief, said: “It’s always gratifying to see how well our voting process works in singling out the finest musicians of our day, and this year is no exception. Youth sits side by side with age and maturity, new musical relationships are celebrated, but above all it is the sheer of joy of making music and sharing it – so important in this increasingly fractured world – that shines through.”

Last week, BBC Radio 3 controller Alan Davey spoke to Music Week about the upcoming diversity in classical music conference, highlighting the need for greater diversity and inclusion within the industry.
