The Grenfell Tower charity single, a cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled, looks set to go straight in at No.1 this week after notching up sales of 120,000 on its opening day of release.
The track, which features an array of artists such as Stormzy, Robbie Williams, Paloma Faith, Lily Allen, James Arthur, Roger Daltrey, Rita Ora, Leona Lewis, Craig David and more, is currently outselling current No.1, Despacito by Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber, by 40,000 copies.
All money raised by the song will go towards those affected by the Grenfell Tower fire, which has claimed the lives of at least 79 people and left hundreds homeless.
The idea for the release was conceived by Simon Cowell, who told The Metro: “I was watching the news and then I drove up to see the building which is around the corner. I’ve seen a lot of bad things and not far from where I was sitting. It dawned on you. It sent chills through you. What hit home was seeing that wall and seeing all those messages.
‘I saw how residents turned up with water and clothes and that’s when I thought I’m not going to sit here and do nothing. For someone in my position to do nothing would be appalling.”
