'I'm so excited for her': Annie Mac praises Koffee as debut EP drops

Annie Mac has told Music Week of her excitement about new Columbia signing Koffee, who is due to play at Mac’s AMP London event this month.

Speaking to Music Week ahead of AMP, which comprises four nights of gigs across the capital from March 27-30 and, for the first time, a programme of talks and discussion, Mac described Koffee as “super-talented”.

“Her music and songwriting really cut through. She’s really young and she’s got all the right co-signs and she’s a she!” said Mac. “I don’t know any female reggae or dancehall acts that are her style, conscious rather than super-pop and glossy, that have got through from that world. Ever in fact.”

Mac is impressed by Koffee’s stats on YouTube, where the video for Toast has 16 million views, and said: “I couldn’t get over how huge she was. It’s quite incredible to see her doing so well so early. I’m so excited for her.”

Mac also praised Koffee’s character: “She seems to have a really good attitude and outlook on life. The AMP show will be the first thing we’ve done together, we’re working on getting her to come and do a gig for my Radio 1 show, too.”

Part of a line-up that also includes Amyl And The Sniffers, Mahalia and Kojey Radical, Koffee plays the Sebright Arms on March 28 alongside Alicai Harley and Sir DJ Corey. Tickets are sold out.

Earlier this year, in a Music Week On The Radar interview, Koffee laid out her plans for a long musical career.

“I would love to represent music as a force for good because I see where that is beneficial to society,” she said.

“Everybody has the capacity to be positive or negative and it’s what you choose more constantly that determines who you are. I would like to think of myself as a positive person, I try to be as much as possible and I channel that into my music by being truthful.”

Koffee releases her debut Rapture EP this week via Columbia. Read the full On The Radar interview here.
