Noel Gallagher recently spoke to Music Week about his decision to release a trilogy of EPs.
The former Oasis leader dropped new single Wandering Star, the first track from his forthcoming Blue Moon Rising EP, yesterday (November 14) via his Sour Mash imprint.
The full EP comes out on March 6 next year and follows Gallagher's previous 2019 extended plays Black Star Dancing and This Is The Place. His last LP was 2017's Who Built The Moon? (285,827 sales, Official Charts Company), which showcased a more progressive sound than his earlier material.
"I was on tour and I felt Who Built The Moon? had run its course," Gallagher told Music Week last month. "I was having a meeting one afternoon and it was like, ‘What about putting some stuff out next year?’ And I thought it was a good idea. I just thought, ‘I don’t have to make an album so it doesn’t have to be an artistic signpost, there doesn’t have to be a huge campaign attached to it, let’s just do three EPs’.
"We’ve come to the point where I’m just like, ‘Who am I making music for now – me or other people?’ I’ve just been following my instincts and they’ve come out great."

He laughed: "I’m actually thinking of issuing the title track off the next EP with a written apology because it’s so far removed from anything I was doing a year ago – far less what I did in Oasis – that it will split what’s left of my fanbase."
Gallagher's first two LPs, 2011's double platinum Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds and 2015's platinum-selling Chasing Yesterday, have sold 865,064 and 341,188 copies, respectively.
“Once I’d got the first record out of my system, which was a more standard Oasis-sounding record, I tried to push it out a little bit and see how far I can take what I do, which is why the EP thing appealed to me," added the BMI Award-winning songwriter.
“It’s funny, when Black Star Dancing came out everyone was like, ‘Oh, is this the new direction?’ It’s like ‘No, it’s just a song, listen to it for what it is’. And then, with This Is The Place, ‘Oh, have you gone acid house?’ ‘No, it’s just a fucking song!’”
