Domino artist Georgia has spoken about reaching “another level” once her second album is released.
Georgia Barnes has been with indie label Domino since before 2015’s self-titled debut was released, and is nominated in the Best Independent Track and One To Watch categories at the 2019 AIM Awards, which takes place tonight (September 3) at London’s Roundhouse. The singer and multi-instrumentalist is part of the line-up for the live show taking place after the ceremony alongside Johnny Marr and Ms Banks.
Speaking to Music Week about her as-yet-untitled second record, Georgia said: “I spent a lot of time re-thinking things in the studio, that time spent and not rushing things was a good thing to do. The team around me, my A&R and manager, wanted me to get it right and gave me the time and space to do that.”
Georgia starred at Glastonbury earlier this summer, where recent single About Work The Dancefloor (3,032,204 Spotify plays) powered a set that proved one of the weekend’s highlights.
“The album’s lyrics are about going out and seeking thrills,” Georgia said. “I’ve been influenced by the dancefloor, and spaces that are protected for hedonistic behaviour and expression are really important in a city like London. A lot of my mates’ clubs have closed down, the lyrics are all about going to express yourself and losing yourself on the dancefloor and making sure you feel free to have thrill seeking activities, you discover stuff about yourself and it’s important.”
Georgia said the album’s theme is one of “thrillseeking and expression in a world of routines and trappings.”
Looking ahead to the future, the singer said she plans to “concentrate on the live show and make sure the album translates. There’s potential for an amazing live show and the possibilities are endless.”
That journey continues tonight at The Roundhouse, where Georgia’s success as an independent artist is to celebrated.
“I want to be on another level, to keep writing songs and get bigger and bigger,” she said.
