International Charts Analysis: Mumford & Sons continue to make impact around the globe

Beset as he is by personal and legal problems, Brooklyn rapper 6ix9ine dropped a new album, Dummy Boy, suddenly on Wednesday (28th November) – and by Friday it was sitting atop the iTunes chart in 64 countries.

It scored a slew of official chart debuts on Friday which were obviously impacted by the shortness of its sales window compared to almost everything else but it will be interesting to plot its progress a week hence, when we should have a clearer picture of its appeal.

Meantime, after topping the chart in The Netherlands and Sweden last week, and debuting in seven other territories, Mumford & Sons’ Delta now opens at No.1 in Canada and The USA, No.2 in Switzerland, No.3 in Austria, No.5 in Australia, No.17 in Spain, No.21 in Finland, No.28 in Denmark, No.34 in Greece, No.38 in The Czech Republic, No.44 in Slovakia and No.114 in France.

Michael Buble’s Love – which was No.1 in The UK and charted in 11 other territories last week – is newly-charted at No.2 behind Mumford & Sons in his native Canada & The USA, and also adds debuts at No.2 in Australia, No.3 in Argentina and Switzerland, No.5 in Hungary, No.7 in Spain, No.10 in Poland, No.15 in Finland, No.17 in Slovakia, No.20 in Denmark, No.21 in The Czech Republic and No.60 in France.

After charting in 11 countries last week – five of them in the Top 10 – Little Mix’s fifth studio album LM5 also racks up a slew of further debuts, opening at No.8 in Australia and Spain, No.15 in Slovakia, No.16 in Denmark, No.21 in Austria, No.22 in Switzerland, No.25 in Canada, No.31 in The Czech Republic, No.40 in The USA, No.42 in Poland and No.55 in France.

No.1 in Norway last week, and debuting in nine other countries, Mark Knopfler’s ninth regular studio album, now does likewise in Switzerland while adding debuts in Denmark (No.3), Finland (No.3), Austria (No.4), Greece (No.5), Canada (No.6), Spain (No.6), Poland (No.7), The Czech Republic (No.9), Australia (No.14), Hungary (No.15), The USA (No.15), France (No.17) and Slovakia (No.38).

New albums from British acts Take That, Cliff Richard and Rita Ora started both their domestic and international chart campaigns on Friday, with rather mixed fortunes.

Although its UK chart debut – at No.11 – was 10 places down on her chart-topping 2012 debut, Rita Ora’s Phoenix managed a decent first slate which also included chartplacings in Germany (No.13), New Zealand (No.18), Ireland (No.20), The Netherlands (No.30), Flanders (No.31), Sweden (No.33), Norway (No.34), Italy (No.63), Wallonia (No.69) and Japan (No.121).

New Take That album Odyssey - favourites ‘re-imagined with new productions’, interview ‘interludes’ and a trio of new songs – stormed to a No.1 debut in The UK, while becoming the first artist album this year to record a six figure sale. It also opens at No.3 in Ireland, No.18 in Germany, No.42 in Flanders, No.80 in Italy, No.85 in The Netherlands and No.102 in Wallonia.

Cliff Richard’s 45th Top 10 album on home territory – it is No.4 in The UK – Rise Up also debuts at No.62 in The Netherlands, No.77 in Flanders and No.94 in Ireland. That Dutch debut might not seem much, but it is his highest chart placing for a new studio album since 1987.
