Grace Carter has told Music Week there “shouldn’t be competition” between artists.
The rising singer, signed to Polydor for records and Sony/ATV for publishing stars in our On The Radar section this week.
“It’s important for everyone to support each other, man or woman, but for females to support and encourage other females, why not?” Carter said, addressing the issue of equality in the music business.
“There should never be competition, artists pinned up against each other, that’s just such a negative thing to do. If anything we should be celebrating each other, not competing. It’s exciting for all of us.”
Carter is signed to Tap Management, home to Lana Del Rey and Dua Lipa. Support shows with Warner Bros’ breakthrough star have, Carter said, been key in her development.
“I’ve learned a lot from Dua. Our music is very different but she works really hard, she’s a really nice person and she’s extremely humble, which is something I’ve definitely learned,” Carter explained.
“You can be whatever you are, but you still have to say thank you and please at the end of it. She’s really respectful and is very supportive of my music, which she doesn’t have to be.”
London-based Carter, who has also shared the stage with Rag’N’Bone Man and Haim, confessed to being “shocked” by audience reaction to her support slots with Dua Lipa.

“I expected to walk out and no one would know who I was, but I’ve seen so many pictures of my face looking so confused, ‘Why is everyone shining their phone torches at me?’ They’re here to see Dua’s upbeat pop songs and I’m singing ballads about my childhood. It blew my mind.”
The connection with Rag’N’Bone Man, who, like Carter grew up around Brighton’s music scene, began when he caught an early hometown show.
“I grew up in Hove and when I was 16 did this show with these guys I went to college with, I was performing and my mum came over telling me that a guy with tattoos was at the back filming the whole set,” said Carter.
“I didn’t know who he was and someone introduced us and we were just chatting, cut to three years later and I’m supporting him on tour! He’s just humble, he loves music. He’s taken me under his wing,”
Carter’s current single Why Her Not Me is out now, and her debut album is in the works.
