'We're outside the status quo': Zena White on Idles' American expansion

Zena White has told Music Week that Idles are set to break America in 2020.

The New York-based Partisan MD won International Woman Of The Year at Music Week Women In Music 2019, and said the label is “fighting outside of the mainstream” with the Bristol band.

Idles peaked at No.5 with their second album Joy As An Act Of Resistance, which has 57,620 sales to date, according to the Official Charts Company. They were nominated for in the British Breakthrough category at the BRIT Awards, while the album was on the Mercury Prize shortlist alongside Dogrel, by their labelmates Fontaines DC.

White starred on the cover of Music Week alongside president Tim Putnam, GM, international Jeff Bell, Idles leader Joe Talbot and Fontaines DC singer Grian Chatten.

“Idles and Fontaines DC are a big focus for the US market, Idles especially. They’re selling so many tickets, but the US media isn’t really tailored towards an artist like them,” said White.

We’re outside the status quo, building bridges

“The band is there, they’re selling tickets, so why can’t we build new media channels that prove that people want to hear the music? That’s the next big challenge for me,” she added. “We’re outside the status quo, building bridges and continuing to prove to people that when someone says it can’t be done, that doesn’t mean it can’t be done.”

White said that she’s excited about working with the female artists Partisan has coming up.

“The challenges we face as women are very present in female artistry,” said White. “There aren’t enough role models, enough support, the problem is their art is invariably always having?to be interpreted through men at some point in the creative process. That’s a really big focus for us.”
