Roosevelt - Roosevelt
Roosevelt first hit my radar in 2013 when I heard Sea, courtesy of Berlin Radio, and a quick investigation revealed him as a singer-songwriter and producer from Cologne, who’d inexplicably released his debut, EP Elliot, on Australia’s Future Classic label.
I started to wonder who this enigma was, who boasted the arrangements, musicality and songwriting of a band that had been playing together for years, along with the production chops of a seasoned house producer.
He’d arrived out of nowhere already fully formed as an artist, and Elliot was easily my most played release that year, with its effortless balance of indie rock and house music, held down with strong grooves and some truly hypnotic synth flourishes; alongside knockout pop vocal harmonies that were at once old fashioned and otherworldly.
Somehow his debut, self-titled LP on Greco-Roman is even better. The songs even more realised, a beautifully
old-fashioned pop album that tells a cohesive story from start to finish.
