BBC Radio 1’s DJ Monki on Billy Turner’s Resolution EP
Billy Turner first came to my attention when I met him at a festival last year. He wasn’t playing, but just came along for the ride, and from there I would hear his name pop up from time to time until he sent me a bunch of music. His production was surprisingly mature and classy for a young producer.
Mine isn’t the only eye he’s caught, with praise and support coming from all directions in the form of Skream, James Zabiela, Dusky, Dense & Pika… the list goes on.
A fresh-faced techno producer from Sussex, he has got more to offer than just slamming records - he’s a class DJ as well.
I had him on the line-up for a few dates of my Monki & Friends UK tour and, as you can imagine, it’s not always easy to warm up a gig when you make big techno records that usually get played at 4am. I felt this was a good test for him - and he delivered.
The beginning of the tour was his first set (and his first time) at Fabric in Room 2. I was impressed not only by the flow of his mixing, but also by his selections, engagement and reading of the room.
His set wasn’t all just big kickdrums and breakdowns, it had a proper groove to it - his percussive tracks were right up my street.
With a new EP, Resolution, out next month, Billy Turner has an exciting time ahead of him. He’s an enthusiastic chap with a bunch of talent and a level head, I’m really looking forward to watching him grow.
