Tastemakers: What's Beat 1's Ebro listening to this week?

Beats 1’s Ebro on CyHi The Prynce’s Nu Africa

I knew about CyHi through his work with Kanye West and as a fan of G.O.O.D. Music, but the Beats 1 team in New York turned me onto this track. It’s one of those ‘one listen’ records. I play it every day, some days I play it multiple times. It’s that fire.

2017 got a bit more interesting when this song dropped. It’s like the best of the 1990s had a baby in 2017, and the artist is Kanye’s muse. It’s not just about the lyrics - it’s also about how that beat bangs.

You need to have both, and Nu Africa encompasses that combination. I love that he’s challenging black people around the world to invest in Africa. I love his rhymes and his energy. It’s one of my favourite records of the year so far.

CyHi is from Georgia, signed to G.O.O.D. Music and a long-time Kanye West collaborator. He was featured on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and has writing credits on Yeezus.

His pen was on one of my favourite tracks of 2016, Ultralight Beam. He’s also put out a ton of mixtapes. This guy has been working! He’s responsible for some great Kanye records already, but he’s a dope rapper that hasn’t quite had his props yet.

He’s putting out his debut album, No Dope On Sundays, this summer. It’s going to be executive produced by Kanye West, too.

I’m hoping he’ll get some real noteworthy recognition beyond just the hip-hop underground fans with this release.
