I spent the summer getting to know two artists. Earlier this year, I was lucky enough to go to Brazil and see a lot of live music. One of the bands I saw was Höröyá.
They’re a nine-piece group consisting of Brazilian and West African musicians and that combination comes through in their sound. They brought four West African dancers up on stage and the whole experience really stayed with me. Some recommended tunes are: Mansa Fela, Tama Tama from their live album Travessia, and Pan Bras’afree’ke, Pt.1.
Back home, I was starting work on BT Sport’s new Premier League theme tune. I’d decided to work with Hand Clapping Song, originally by The Meters, but wanted to do something new with it. The plan was to get Höröyá to produce a cover, which would then be remixed. For the remix I lined up London-based duo God Colony.
Their production is spot on, they have impeccable taste in the artists they collaborate with and I love that they’re not afraid of a hook (check out SE16 and Fights). They’ve only released a handful of tracks but have already made a name for themselves. A wider audience beckons.
