Capital’s George Shelley on Dua Lipa’s Blow Your Mind (Mwah)
I was a huge fan of Dua Lipa’s debut single New Love, and since its release last summer she’s become one of the biggest breakthrough acts of the year.
Her latest record Blow Your Mind (Mwah) is brilliantly catchy. She’s got a really cool edginess about her, and this is a bold, contemporary pop song with a real spark to it.
It’s packed with hooks and I love the sassiness of the lyrical content. There’s a darkness to it too, and she’s created a really interesting juxtaposition between the song’s lyrics and its upbeat, feel-good melody, it’s really clever.
I first heard it when I was asked my opinion on the soundtrack to our new TV ad for Capital.
I love the style of her music - New Love had this tribal drum beat throughout that was really intriguing, and Blow Your Mind (Mwah) has a similar stand-out quality to it that just grabs your attention when you hear it on the radio. I can’t wait for the release of her debut album, which is due out in February.
