Kerrang!'s Nick Ruskell on Ohhms' The Fool
Canterbury crew Ohhms have been lurking around the British doom metal scene for a couple of years now, and every time I’ve seen them they’ve been heavier than an iron gorilla.
But there always seemed to be more going on with them than sheer, down-tuned heaviness and Black Sabbath worship.
I mean, there’s loads of that, but none of their five members have got a proper beard, and most of them have got short hair, and have been heard talking about old post-hardcore bands like Embrace.
But playing in small pubs, their wall of amps trounced any of that subtlety, to the point where I wondered if it was just my imagination. Nope.
Their new album, The Fool (due for release on March 31 via Holy Roar Records), brings all those elements right to the fore.
The riffs here are, of course, crushing, but there’s moments where it goes off into dreamy bits that Deftones fans will be able to happily gorge themselves on.
So, yeah, doom for people who don’t like doom? That’s Ohhms, that is.
