So Young Magazine’s Sam Ford on Crewel Intentions’ Crewel Intentions
The story of how Palma Violets helped to inspire So Young Magazine is one we’ve told countless times now, but the love affair began with their bassist, Chilli Jesson and his performance at Reading Festival in 2012. A frontman trapped stage right, behind a bass guitar and waiting for his turn. That’s how it felt and, as it turns out, that’s what it was. Cue, Crewel Intentions.
Our story with them began with a rough demo landing in our inbox and us excitedly asking them to play our festival at The Old Blue Last in August. It was a moment that confirmed their place in our future issues. Hailing from London, Jesson has paired with Marley Mackey to create a true rock‘n’roll band, unafraid to be great and willing to be adored. Having only played a handful of shows, they’ve just about slipped out of the shadows of rumour, and it’s clear they’ve been working hard behind the scenes.
Melting the style of ‘70s cowboys with the sounds of Iceage, Fat White Family and Jesson’s Palma Violets war cries, this isn’t PV Mk II. Crewel Intentions are sideburns, hip thrusts and, potentially, an answer to that tedious guitar music question. They’re unsigned, with no music due this year, so catch them somewhere small while you can. We are hoping to lure them onto one of our line-ups again very soon.
