I am all for the trance revival we’ve been experiencing in the last couple of years, and Toronto artist Nathan Micay puts a contemporary twist on it.
Originally producing as Bwana, he relaunched under his real name last year with highly anticipated 12” Whities 017, which comprised two singles that had been sought after thanks to plays from DJ Avalon Emerson. There’s a huge draw to Micay’s highly emotive and euphoric productions. Debut album Blue Spring combined all of Micay’s influences, from hardcore and techno, to IDM and jungle. It was brilliant, of course, with vinyl copies selling out across the board. The project, which included The Capsules’ Pride (a homage to manga series Akira) further cemented his status as an innovative new artist.
Micay balances fun, high-octane and sometimes incredibly silly releases (see his ridiculous Bocelli edit) with stirring releases like Did U Know I Cannot Die, from upcoming EP Butterfly Arcane (September 13).
Micay’s incredibly thoughtful approach allows you to forget everything for a while, coming back for reflection at the end. His music has a way of staying with you, a connection to the good times.
