Making Waves: Laurel

Making Waves: Laurel

Southampton singer Laurel is bubbling nicely towards the release of her debut album, Dogviolet. Music Week finds out what's what in our latest instalment of Making Waves.

KEY TRACK: Crave
LABEL: Counter Records
MANAGEMENT: chrisbellam@underplay.co.uk
TWITTER: @ClassicLaurel

WHO: Southampton-born Laurel Arnell-Cullen is a 23-year-old singer and songwriter who lives in London.

WHAT: Raw pop music, tinged with the bass of a faraway dancefloor.

WHERE: Laurel spends most of her time in the home studio where she made debut album Dogviolet. Note that it was fed through a reel-to-reel tape machine at Gizzard Studios.

WHY SO EMOTIONAL?

Laurel says she locked herself away for lengthy periods of time to capture “the true mania” of falling in love. That’d be why new AA-side Crave/Same Mistakes hits so hard.

SOUNDS INTENSE…

In a big way. But Laurel’s melodic sensibilities are impressive (she’s written with Diane Warren), and
her music combines strong guitar lines with electronic crackle and big choruses.

WHEN’S THE LP?

August 24, and Laurel is touring the UK in September.
