Drake smashes Post Malone's one-day global Spotify record with Scorpion

Drake’s fifth album, Scorpion, was released on Friday (June 29) and has already broken Spotify’s record for one-day streams.

According to data available at spotifycharts.com, the 25-track album racked up 132,450,203 streams, breaking the record previously set by Post Malone’s Beerbongs & Bentleys, which notched 78,744,748 in April.

While official figures from Spotify and other platforms have not been made available at the time of publication, Scorpion was played more than 170 million times on its first day on Apple Music, while its length seems geared towards maximising plays on DSPs.

Drake's ScorpionSZN takeover on Spotify is a first-of-its-kind initiative that has seen him 'take over' multiple playlists simultaneously, including RapCaviar, Today's Top Hits and others.

As the week progresses, Drake could claim Beerbongs & Bentleys’ title as the album with most week one Spotify plays. Post Malone’s album racked up 236,500,546 streams in the U.S. and 411,816,710 globally in its first week. The previous record holder was Drake’s More Life mixtape with 385m streams.

Drake faces a battle for the UK No.1 spot, however. Florence + The Machine's High As Hope is understood to have been ahead in early sales flashes, which didn't include all streaming data. Music Week will have the full midweek update later today. Drake’s biggest-selling UK album is 2016’s Views (540,526 sales), while, perhaps tellingly, God’s Plan is his biggest single here with 1,220,147 sales.

God’s Plan, which features on Scorpion, hit No.1 in the UK and currently has 861,048 streams on Spotify.

Eight Scorpion tracks feature in Drake’s most popular songs on Spotify, with Nonstop’s 22,364,029 the highest total for those not out prior to release day.

Previous single Nice For What has 357,518,560 plays so far, I’m Upset has 78,747,233 streams.

Stay tuned to musicweek.com throughout the week for the very latest Drake numbers and analysis.
