Sony makes no EMI Publishing concessions to EU

Ahead of an expected decision by regulators this week, Sony Corp has not made any concessions to the EU on its acquisition of EMI Music Publishing

The deal would secure Sony’s publishing business as the leading player in the market. But there are concerns about their potential power from bodies including IMPALA, the European Composer And Songwriter Alliance and BASCA.

In May, Sony agreed a $2.3 billion (£1.7bn) deal to acquire a controlling stake in EMI Music Publishing

EU competition regulators have consulted with rivals and users on whether they think Sony would uses its enhanced position to secure better terms for digital deals.

Sony has not submitted any concessions in the European Commission’s preliminary assessment of the acquisition.

The deadline for any decision is Friday (October 26). Options include unconditional approval of the deal or a full investigation by regulators.
